The Q-6-4 rule
The optimal three card poker strategy is astonishingly simple. After you look at your three cards, compare them to the hand Queen-Six-Four:
In practice that means: always play if your highest card is a King or an Ace. If your highest card is a Queen, play only when your second card is a 6 or higher (and if it is exactly a 6, your third card must be a 4 or higher). If your highest card is a Jack or lower, fold. Any pair or better is an automatic play. That is the complete card poker strategy — there is nothing else to memorise.
Why Queen-Six-Four is the break-even point
When you fold, you lose your Ante for certain. When you make the Play bet, you risk one more unit but you have a chance to win both the Ante and Play bets. The Queen-Six-Four hand is the exact point where the expected value of playing equals the expected value of folding. Above it, raising wins more than it costs over time; below it, folding loses less. Because the dealer qualifies with Queen-high, hands right around a bare Queen are the close calls — and Q-6-4 is where the math tips.
The Ante and Play bets
Your Ante and Play bets are always equal. If the dealer fails to qualify (worse than Queen-high), the Ante pays even money and the Play bet pushes. If the dealer qualifies and you win, both bets pay even money; if the dealer qualifies and wins, you lose both. This is why the Play/Fold decision is the entire strategy — nothing you do after making the Play bet changes the outcome.

Pair Plus is not a strategy bet
The Pair Plus side bet is decided the moment the cards are dealt — there is no decision and therefore no strategy. It carries a higher house edge than the Ante game, so a disciplined three card poker strategy either skips it or treats it as a small entertainment wager. Your edge-minimising play is to bet the Ante and apply Q-6-4 every hand.

Three of a kind, straights and the premium hands
Under three card poker strategy every hand is an automatic Play once you hold a pair or better, so a three of a kind, a straight, a flush or a straight flush is never a fold. Those are also the hands that trigger the Ante Bonus and the big Pair Plus payouts: a three of a kind pays a bonus on the Ante bet even if the dealer never qualifies, and a straight flush is the top of the table. You will still make the same Play bet you always do — the strong hand simply adds bonus money on top. The only real card poker strategy decisions live in the marginal Queen-high and Jack-high hands.
Common three card poker strategy mistakes
The two mistakes that cost players the most are folding a hand that beats Queen-Six-Four and playing a hand that does not. Folding a bare Ace-high or King-high hand throws away a positive-expectation Play bet; chasing a weak Queen-high or Jack-high hand into the Play bet donates the difference to the house. A third leak is over-betting Pair Plus as if it were a strategy: it is a fixed-odds side bet on your three card poker hand with a higher edge, so keep it small. Stick to the Ante bet, apply Q-6-4, and this casino game gives up almost nothing beyond its built-in edge.
