What is Three Card Poker?
Three Card Poker is a casino table game where you play a three-card poker hand against the dealer — not against other players. It was invented in the mid-1990s and is now a fixture in almost every casino. Each round you place an Ante bet and are dealt three cards; you then decide whether to fold or to make an equal Play bet and go to showdown against the dealer. An optional Pair Plus side bet pays purely on the strength of your own three cards, no matter what the dealer holds.
How to play Three Card Poker
The flow of a hand is quick and always the same, which is a big part of why the game is so popular in the casino:
Place your bets
Put a chip on the Ante circle. Optionally add a Pair Plus bet — it wins or loses on your own hand alone.
Look at your three cards
You and the dealer each receive three cards; only yours are face up.
Play or Fold
Make a Play bet equal to your Ante to continue, or fold and forfeit the Ante and Pair Plus.
Showdown
The dealer needs Queen-high or better to qualify. Beat a qualifying dealer and both the Ante and Play bets pay even money.
Three Card Poker hand rankings
Because a hand is only three cards, the rankings differ from regular five-card poker. Crucially, a straight beats a flush — with three cards a straight is actually the harder hand to make. Here is every three card poker hand from best to worst, with how often it appears:

The Ante, Play and Pair Plus bets
There are two separate wagers in three card poker and it helps to think of them independently. The Ante bet (plus the matching Play bet) is your game against the dealer. The Pair Plus bet is a side bet on your own hand. You can play either or both.
Ante Bonus
The Ante Bonus rewards strong hands on the Ante bet and is paid even if the dealer does not qualify — you do not have to win the hand to collect it:

Three Card Poker house edge
Played with correct strategy, the Ante game carries a house edge of about 3.37% of the Ante, or roughly 2.01% measured against your total action across the Ante and Play bets (the element of risk). That makes three card poker a mid-range casino game — better than many carnival games but not as sharp as optimal blackjack or full-pay video poker. The Pair Plus side bet has its own edge, around 7.3% on the 1-4-6-30-40 table above, so it is more of an entertainment bet than a value one.

Three Card Poker vs other poker games
Three Card Poker sits alongside Caribbean Stud and other stud poker games in the casino, but it is faster and simpler than all of them. Where five-card stud poker asks you to build a poker hand from five cards, three card poker gives you just three — so every poker hand is quicker to read and the strategy is a single rule instead of a chart. Compared with Ultimate Texas Hold'em it trades depth for speed: one Play-or-Fold call and the three card poker hand is done. That simplicity, plus the Pair Plus bonus, is why three card poker draws players who find other card poker games slow.
